The
East Winds Symphonic Band was founded in 1981 by a trio of musicians
looking to form a quality wind ensemble. In November of that
year, there were 26 musicians on the roster. In 2007, we
find 67 active musicians on the band's roster. Throughout
the growth of the band, the focus of the group has remained the same:
to provide an outlet for community musicians to play quality
concert band music.
Early
rehearsals were held in Wilkinsburg. The band moved
rehearsals to Forest Hills in the early 1990s and has been rehearsing at its current location,
Trinity Christian School, since 1993.
Current conductor Susan Sands
continues the tradition of previous conductors Jay Stivanson and Jim
Rosetti, by leading the all-volunteer group through weekly rehearsals
and numerous concerts throughout the year.
In
2004, EWSB began the Three Rivers Community Band Festival to highlight
community bands throughout the Pittsburgh region. See the festival web site for more
information.
