Concert Band Experience for High School Students

Summer Side-by-Side Program

East Winds Symphonic Band, an award winning community band based in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, announces the Fifth Annual Summer Side-by-Side program for band students in grades 9-12.  This is an opportunity for talented and successful band students to rehearse and perform “side by side” with the members of the East Winds Symphonic Band. The program begins with rehearsal on Monday, May 15 and ends Sunday, July 23.

Students will have the opportunity to perform in several summer concerts including a performance in Ligonier on Sunday, June 25th  (7:00-9:00pm), Kennywood Park on Saturday, July 1nd  (6:00-7:00pm) and Monroeville at Gateway Jr. High on Sunday, July 23rd.  Four free all-day passes to Kennywood Park will be given to each student for the day of the Kennywood concert.

The completed application must be submitted by May 1, 2017 for consideration. Please include a recommendation from your private instructor or your current band director.  Notification of acceptance to the program will be sent via email.  Note that only a limited number of students will be admitted to the program each year.

Participation cost will be $15, plus $20 for a band shirt that will be worn for summer performances. The band shirt along with khaki pants or khaki skirt is the summer concert uniform.  The participation fee can be paid at the first rehearsal on Monday, May 16th.

If accepted to the program, the expectations include:

  • Preparing the music.
  • Regular attendance at Monday night rehearsals that are held at Trinity Christian School in Forest Hills (299 Ridge Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA  15221. Rehearsal time: 8:00pm to 10:00pm.
  • No more than two missed rehearsals.
  • If there is a need to miss a rehearsal or concert, notification must be given in advance to the section leader via email or telephone.
  • Inappropriate behavior or inadequate music preparation will result in dismissal from  the program.
